Sleep, like oxygen, water, and food, is an indispensable element of our daily life. Unfortunately, it is neglected by many of us. In this fast-paced society, people are under more stress than ever before. This leads to people not having enough time to sleep. Sleeping deprivation can lead to many problems, such as affecting people's health, cognitive ability, and most importantly, safety. The statistics shows that more than 61% of the people in the world are in lack of sleep and about 67% of them think that sleep deprivation has obvious effect on their happiness and health. In America,   69.7% of the males and 61.8% of the females were classified as poor sleepers. (Khan Awan et al., 2018). Sleep is very important, and a lack of sleep has negative effects on students like impacting their health, leading to a decline in concentration, and harming their mental state.

First of all, sleep deprivation can affect students’ health and safety. It can cause many diseases, such as headache. According to Ranasinghe, Gayathri and Priya (2018), more than 100 college students wrote in questionnaires that sleep deprivation made their heads ache. Sleeping deprivation also leads to increased blood pressure and higher levels of chemicals linked to inflammation, both of which could be the trigger of heart disease (Cherney, K., & Watson, S.). Besides, sleeping deprivation has negative effect on immune system. While we sleep, our immune system produces protective, infection-fighting substances like cytokines. These substances are used to combat foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. They give our immune system more energy to defend our body against illness (Cherney, K., & Watson, S.). Sleep deprivation prevents the immune system from building up its forces. If we don’t get enough sleep, our body may not be able to fend off invaders, and it may also take us longer to recover from illness (Williams, 2013). In conclusion, we should have early rest to prevent potential illness. Missing sleep also harms our ability to concentrate or focus on the task at hand. For example, it is more likely to get involved in car accidents when having inadequate sleep. If we feel sleepy while walking across the street, we can't stop immediately, which make a car accident more likely (Williams, 2013). Being drowsy can also increase the chance of injuries (Cherney, K., & Watson, S.). Sleep deprivation can lead to forgetfulness and inability to concentrate. And these symptoms result in decreased performance (Davis, 2018). This indicates that we should value sleep for the sake of concentration ability.

Adequate sleep is very important for students’ cognitive ability. It plays an important role in decision-making and judgment. Studies have shown that people who are not getting enough sleep can't consider different aspects of the issue very well. Therefore, they often make the wrong decision. This will greatly affect the results of testing and homework (Davis, 2018). A lack of sleep can negatively impact both short-term and long-term memory, which also affects our judgment (Cherney, K., & Watson, S.). What’s more, adequate sleep can reduce anxiety. Long-term lack of sleep can cause anxiety, and the only way to relieve this situation is making up for it (Davis, 2018). Enough sleep is clearly one of the key factors affecting cognitive ability.

From what I have learned, sleep deprivation has negative effect on students’ health and safety, so adequate sleep is very important. Since a lack of sleep is such a concern, it’s important to use medical solutions, like therapy and medication to reduce sleep deprivation. Therefore, I suggest that students with sleeping problems ask help from doctors or sleep therapists, who can offer professional solutions. It is recommended that we have 7 to 9 hours of sleep each day. If we don’t meet the requirement, we had better check our sleeping pattern and figure out the way to adjust it. The worst thing to do is continuing to neglect this problem.
